⚖️ Know your local law
Most jurisdictions limit e-scooter speed and power on public roads. A tuned scooter can be reclassified as a motor vehicle that needs registration, insurance and a licence. Tune for private land, closed tracks or where it is explicitly allowed.
🛑 Brakes before speed
Every tuning plan on this site should start with brakes and tires. Stopping distance grows with the square of speed: going from 25 km/h to 35 km/h nearly doubles the distance you need to stop.
🔥 Respect the battery
Lithium packs can catch fire when cells are punctured, over-discharged or charged with the wrong charger. Never bypass the BMS. If you are not confident with a spot welder, buy a pre-built pack from a reputable seller.
💾 Back up before flashing
Dump and save your stock firmware before flashing anything. Keep an ST-Link programmer on hand for Ninebot and Xiaomi units so a bad flash is an inconvenience, not a dead scooter.
🌡️ Watch the temperature
Raised motor current means more heat. After a tune, touch the motor after a hard ride: if you cannot hold your hand on it, back the current off or upgrade the motor.
🪖 Gear up
Above 30 km/h a bicycle helmet is no longer enough. Full-face or downhill helmets, gloves and wrist guards are the minimum for a tuned performance scooter.
